Got some great news in my inbox today from my buddy, Thom Powers. He's been appointed the new International Documentary Programmer for the Toronto Film Festival, and he's an absolutely perfect choice.
Thom is a gifted doc filmmaker, journalist and teacher, all-around good guy, and been a fixture on the festival scene for as long as I can remember. He loves docs, knows a great one when he sees it, and will happily talk shop from early morning java 'til the bar closes.
During the past Toronto festival, while I was chomping at the bit for 6 days before 51 Birch finally screened, we hung out, drank, gossiped, commiserated, saw tons of movies and compared notes long into the night. He changed his original flight out so he could catch my premiere, then eagerly grabbed my camcorder to capture my 85-year old Dad's first Q&A for posterity.
When Thom highly recommends a doc, there's never a doubt it's going to be worth seeing. So when you see future doc programs at Toronto, you can rest assured of one thing. They'll be consistently great.
